With the growth of copper line and wire line fishing techniques within the Great Lakes salmon fisheries, anglers have been able to continue to catch fish even with ultra-clear water conditions. The issue has now become that landing fish at the end of many hundreds of feet of copper fishing line is not the best experience, especially with reels running standard gear ratios. Cold Water Wire Line reels add high-speed gear ratios and high-performance spool bearings to address the rigors of wire and copper fishing lines. These reels put the fun back in catching fish on wire and copper fishing lines.
Engage the reel in one direction for rock-solid hook sets.
Carbon Mechanical Stabilizing System
Patented Design stabilizes the spool shaft at 3 key stress points to eliminate flex under pressure – reel is more durable, strong and smoother than the competition.
Strong, Stable, Smooth – Okuma’s Mechanical Stabilizing System is a support system that ties the spool shaft, pinion gear, pinion gear bearing, drive shaft and main gear together with a single support system. While other reels on the market offer minimal or no gear stabilization, this patented Okuma design allows all of these critical parts to stay in precise alignment. Designed specifically to hold up to the demands of braided and wire line fishing, the MSS support system stabilizes the spool shaft at 3 key stress points to eliminate flex under pressure – which directly translates into a reel that is more durable, stronger and smoother than the competition.
The Ergo Grip handle knob is an extremely comfortable oversized handle-knob design for both speed and power. This soft-touch knob has been ergonomically designed to fit in the palm of your hand and will be found on certain Okuma lever drag reels, star drag reels and some spinning reel models.

Great reels for the price
Great reels for the price. The only issue is the same as all line counters with Okuma. If the handle is at about 1 o’clock you are unable to disengage the reel to release line. I only have used them for a half of the season so long term drag durability is yet to be seen although I have purchased 12 of the cold waters to date
Reel is top quality, and has very good features for it’s price range. Have 18 Okuma reels now with various different lines on them for Salmon fishing and have never been disappointed with their performance.
Bought my first one and love it. Two more are on the way to replace my Okuma Magda Pros.
Great smooth reel ! Bought 4 and seems to be a great reel.
Hopefully just an isolated thing
It’s winter and cold here in Illinois so no trolling yet, but I have spooled my new line on the reel. Right out of the box the drag would not function properly, I took the handle and drag assembly apart and oiled the drag assembly and left it loose for a day then tried it to see if there was any change. It did seem better, but wont be sure until I get it out on the water. Never had to disassemble a brand new real right out of the box before and I’ve been fishing and buying reels for half a century now. I do own other Okuma reels and rods with no complaints. Hopefully just an isolated thing?
The best reel in this price range!!
I boought the CW-453D and it works great for saltwater fishing. I spool 65 lb power pro and it hold almost 300 yards but I decide to took some off and tie with my 30 lb fluorocarbon leader. It works great!!! I caught a lot of rockfish. The line counter is so great because when you need to fish in middle section you know how much line you need to release.
Nice working reels, Good value for the price. Works well.
Nice reel and light weight. Loaded the line easily and the action of the gears is smooth. Everything about the machine is sturdy. I not only troll but drop line to the bottom. It is good to have a reliable counter to pair with a fish finder. I regularly score by reading where the fish are.
Good mid price line counting bait caster. Use it for salmon, steelhead and sturgeon.
Great Red Snapper Reel
Great reel for Red Snapper, been using this reel for salt water fishing in destin fl and it has done a great job so far.
So far so good, time will tell.
Very nice reel for the price for Walleye fishing. I have two for 4 months.
I only had for a bit now but I have landed several striped bass to about 25 lbs trolling tandem mojos without issue. Plenty of drag and a good clicker to know when fish have arrived.
I would give these reels 6 stars if i could
I have 5 of them now in various sizes and use them for striped bass trolling and even live lining. The line counter is the ticket. I have greater control over my lure depths.
Smooth as Glass operation.
Only reason I did not give this item 5 Stars is because I have not had the chance to use it yet. I did add to braided line and it was smooth as glass. I have high hopes for this reel.
Thanks Okuma for a great well priced reel
Caught 2 limits of Rock fish back to back days out SF Gate to Farallon Islands and up to Point Arena. The drag takes some extra turns to activate but once you dial it in no problems. The line tension nut fell off first day, my fault trying to dial in bait drop speed going down 300 feet. Holds 300 yards of line and can’t beat performance for the price. My freezer is full of fillets, Thanks Okuma
I use it for both salmon and musky. 30lb mono and 80lb braid. Works well, line counter is accurate, good quality reel. I will be getting more.
